Ubuntu 26.04 LTS “Resolute Raccoon” is out
Canonical released the 11th Ubuntu LTS on 23 April 2026: Linux 7.0, GNOME 50 on Wayland, CUDA and ROCm in the archive, and TPM-backed disk encryption.
Linux kernel 7.0 is the new mainline
After Linux 6.19 Linus Torvalds tagged kernel 7.0 in mid-April 2026. The jump is mostly numbering; hardware and driver work continues as usual.
GNOME 50 “Tokyo” is a Wayland-only desktop

systemd 259: last major release with SysV scripts
systemd v259 landed on 17 December 2025: experimental musl, persistent journald by default, nftables networking, and the last major line that still supports System V service scripts.
Debian 13 “Trixie” became the new stable
Debian 13.0 was released on 9 August 2025. Trixie is the current stable branch, with point releases such as 13.6 following in 2026.
